Ms. Shelina Bhamani, Gen Secy Awareness Voluntary Organization, (Project: Awareness Pakistan) presented a paper on ' Problems faced by parents of young children with Mental Retardation' at the 3rd Int'L Conference on Global trends in Emotional Intelligence (IE) & Peace at Kathmandu - Nepal.


Problems Faced by Parents of Young Children with Mental Retardation

                                                               Abstract
The objective of this investigation was to explore problems faced by parents of the young children with mental retardation. A sample of five parents (fathers and mothers) from different areas of Karachi, Pakistan was chosen for this study through purposive sampling. The data was collected through a semi structured interview guide and responses of the parents were recorded on a digital audio recorder. The data was analyzed deriving codes and themes manually from the translated transcriptions. The data analysis revealed that parents of the children with mental retardation face several physical, emotional, financial and social problems. These include problems of tiredness, stress,and unsatisfactory intercourse, feelings of guilt, embarrassments, jealousy, hopelessness and financial constraints. Consequently, the study presented recommendations to facilitate the parents of the young children with mental retardation.
